The PaiDom Name
Our name is the union of two words from the Kiowas, a native tribe that inhabited these Southern Great Plains long before our ancestors, at a time when this land was a seemingly endless, unbroken prairie. "Pai" is the Kiowa word for sun, and "Dom" is their term for land. In the most basic sense, we are not in the business of selling meat. Instead, our livelihood depends on the health of the land and its ability to harvest energy from the sun. If we steward this land properly, it will grow valuable forage. This forage will gather energy from the sun and nutrients from the soil, and then will be grazed by our livestock and converted to meat. Thus, our livelihood rests not on meat production, but on the ability of our land to harvest the sun. Consequently, we owe our existence to them, the sun and the land, prompting us to choose the name "SunLand," or in the words of the Kiowas, "PaiDom."
The PaiDom Mission
To establish a homestead worthy of raising a family, a farm that is a safe place for children to grow up, a farm that teaches them life's lessons and molds them into moral and upstanding citizens. To grow and market the finest quality of pasture-raised and drug-free meats, while focusing our efforts on the sustainable management of this land with which we've been blessed, a land that we must pass on to future generations. To provide a meaningful connection between people and their food, a connection in which they know where their food came from, who grew it, and how it was grown. To build a trusting relationship with our customers, a relationship that doesn't require a certification stamp for both grower and consumer to realize that each received a fair deal.
The PaiDom Difference
What makes our meats better than those you buy at the supermarket? Consider the following differences:
Our primary concern is the health of our land, not the health of our pocketbook. True wealth comes from the land. Thus, if a practice degrades the land, it will eventually destroy us financially. Our animals are grown entirely on pasture, not in feedlot pens. They graze in paddocks and are moved regularly to fresh pasture, providing forage with adequate time to recover before being grazed again. The animals and the plants are both treated with extreme care. Our livestock are fed a forage-based diet rather than grain, resulting a leaner cut of meat loaded with vital nutrients like Omega-3 fatty acids and conjugated linoleic acids (CLA's). Our animals are treated in the most humane manner possible. They rarely, if ever, experience the stress of sorting, branding and processing, transporting, or prodding. Their temperament reflects this treatment, and this stress-free environment produces a more tender cut of meat, as well as animals that are calm and easy to handle. From conception to consumption, our livestock are grown without the use of antibiotics, wormers, hormones, pesticides, or even vaccinations, yielding meats that are free of health hazards. We don't buy our livestock from sale barns, so we know their entire health history. Our consumers know who grew the meat on their table, as well as where and how it was grown.
Now wouldn't you rather have a steak from PaiDom?
The PaiDom Philosophy
Our philosophy hinges on well-being.
We look out for the well-being of the LAND by controlling where, when, and how long our livestock graze. We maintain the well-being of our ANIMALS by providing fresh pasture and water, and by treating them humanely. We provide for the well-being of our rural COMMUNITY by our civic participation and by contributing to the local economy, both as producers and consumers. We guard the well-being of our FAMILY by making our ranch a safe place for children to learn the value of an honest day's work (as well as the value of hard-earned leisure) and by marketing our meats directly to consumers, thereby avoiding the whims of Chicago's commodity markets. We promote the well-being of SOCIETY by nurturing a personal relationship between grower and consumer, and by providing people with a wholesome product at a fair price.
